The Midnight Battle
I lie in bed in the darkness. My body is tired, but tense - and I wait
There it is! The horrible whine of my midnight hunter!
Patience... I tell my self as my whole body wrinkles in repulsion
Closer and closer she comes and my heart beats in my mouth - and I wait
All at once, I spring from my covers and flip on the light!
Frantically my eyes search the air for the blood sucking insect
There! I spot her almost floating jerky form as she is drawn to my breath
Aha! Filled with resolution I try to squish her in midflight, but....
Alas... once again, she eludes me and retreats to her darkened lair.... beneath my bed
Filled with dissapointed forboding, I turn off the light and pull the covers to my chin
I can do only one thing.... wait
Time and time agian I and this miserable excuse for life meet in battle....
And time and time again I admit defeat as I have to once again enclose myself in darkness - to wait
My eyes grow heavier, my mind more scrambled, and my disgust mor heightened
Finally, I can take no more... leaving the light on, I crawl in bed and fall asleep
we will ahve to save this battle for another night...
For I know she is still waiting - beneath my bed
